Walking is a great exercise and good way to get out and enjoy the outdoors, but as a pedestrian you have to take extra precautions when you’re walking close to traffic. One of the best ways to do this is by exercising caution at intersections and crosswalks and increasing your visibility at night by wearing retro-reflective clothing and carrying flashlights. This article will brief you on the importance of pedestrian accident safety and offer some ways to make sure you return safely the next time you head out on foot for a stroll, power walk, or errand.

Why is pedestrian accident safety important?

pedestrian safetyPedestrians are all people who travel by foot, wheelchair, stroller or any other similar means. While these options are good for your health and the environment, pedestrians are also among the most vulnerable users of the road. Pedestrians are injured and even killed every day in traffic related accidents, and understanding how to stay safe as a pedestrian can prevent you from becoming a victim.

Pedestrian safety tips

Consider these tips the next time you go on a walk:

  • Cross the street at a designated crosswalk or intersection whenever possible.
  • Increase your visibility at night by carrying a flashlight and wearing retro-reflective or white clothing.
  • It’s safest to walk on a sidewalk, but if one is not available, walk on the shoulder and face traffic so you can see the cars coming.
  • Avoid distractions such as electronic devices, and especially texting, that take your attention off the road.

Children are especially at risk for pedestrian related accidents because of their small size, inability to judge distances and speeds, and lack of experience with traffic rules. Make sure to keep an extra eye on kids when they are walking near traffic.
